Permadeath is one of the defining features of STAR WARS Zero Company — early coverage calls it out specifically — and understanding it is the difference between a squad that grows into legends and one that bleeds out a soldier at a time.

What permadeath means here

Your operatives grow as you deploy them: new abilities, deeper bonds, stronger synergies. But they can also fall in battle and be lost for good, commemorated on the memorial wall back at the Den. Losing a veteran isn’t just losing stats — it’s losing a character, a web of synergies and hours of investment. That’s the deliberate emotional engine of the campaign.

Why it raises the stakes of everything

Because every operative is something you can lose, ordinary decisions carry weight. A reckless flank, an exposed position between turns, a greedy push for one more kill — any of them can cost you someone you can’t replace. Good Zero Company play is as much about risk management as damage output.

How to keep your squad alive

Five habits do most of the work:

1. Bring a Medic. A timely heal or revive turns a fatal turn into a survivable one. On harder content it’s close to mandatory.
2. Scout before you commit. A Scout revealing an ambush prevents the deaths you never see coming.
3. Never move an operative you can’t cover. Plan movement around the next safe position, not just the objective.
4. Use overwatch and the Advantage economy. Make the enemy take the risks; spend big abilities to end fights a turn early.
5. Don’t gamble with veterans. If a play needs a low-percentage roll, it’s usually not worth risking a bonded operative.
